What is AdBlue® or DEF?

AdBlue® or DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is the latest European emissions legislation and means commercial vehicles on the roads of Britain are now equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and use AdBlue diesel emission fluid or DEF as it is also known. Thanks to the changes in the legislation, there has been a dramatic reduction in noxious nitrogen oxides and particulate matter in recent years.

Basically it is a clear liquid made up of 32.5% high purity urea (which comprises carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen) and 67.5% deionised water. In the SCR process this solution reacts with and neutralises nitrogen oxides.

Do I have to use AdBlue®?

If your truck or car risks exceeding maximum emission levels, then yes. It runs the same risk whether the system is SCR or EGR. All trucks entering Greater London, since 2012, have to meet Euro 4 emission levels or cleaner. A daily charge is currently proposed for non-compliant vehicles.
